Avenue of the Giants

The Avenue of the Giants is a 31-mile drive through Humboldt Redwoods State Park between Garberville and Fortuna. We drove through it two days in a row. Once was simply not enough. The drive is spectacular.  We kept stopping by the side of the road over and over again to step into the forest. Walking around (literally) giant trees in a quiet, mystical forest felt magical. There were amazing shades of green and brown with streaks of sun light wherever we turned. We felt unusually minuscule around those majestic trees.

Along the 31 mile drive there are 50 thousand acres of redwood groves to explore with many hiking trails around. I would never believe without seeing with my own eyes that these kind of botanical giants actually exist. The biggest tree (unoriginally named ‘Big Tree’) has a circumference of 68feet (20.7m) and the oldest recorded tree in the forest was 2200 years old.
We left humbled by the beauty of this ancient and immense forest.
